FAQs

why IS there no mention of “rugby” in the club name?

The Edinburgh Academical Football Club omits “rugby” from its title as its formation predates the split in rugby and association football rules which occurred in the 1860s. In other words, they did play what would later become known as rugby, but it was it just a form of football in 1857.

WHO OWNS RAEBURN PLACE?

The Edinburgh Academical Club (EAC) are owners of the freehold title of Raeburn Place. The Raeburn Place Foundation (RPF) is the charitable body which oversees the running of Raeburn Place and has a 99-year lease on the ground from the EAC. RPF were responsible for development of the ground at Raeburn Place. The Edinburgh Academical Football Club do not own Raeburn Place but are entitled to use it in the same way we have since 1857 due to the agreement between EAC and RPF.

DOES the RAEBURN PLACE FOUNDATION development FUND EDINBURGH ACCIES?

No. The Raeburn Place Foundation (RPF) is a separate charity. While the charity regulators agreed that the legacy clubs – the rugby and cricket clubs as well as Edinburgh Academy school – could continue to use the facilities, they can’t receive any financial support from RPF. For example, the rugby club pays market rate to lease the space for The Place.

WHO RUNS THE PLACE CAFE, CLUBHOUSE, BAR?

The Place is operated by The Edinburgh Academical Football Club. It primarily serves the community as a café from Monday to Friday and acts as a clubhouse for match weekends. It may open for special events outside these times.
